Established in 1936, it is India's oldest national park and the birthplace of the country's wildlife conservation movement. This park also became India's first Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1973, further strengthening its role in wildlife conservation.

One of the highlights of visiting Jim Corbett is exploring its diverse safari zones, each offering a unique landscape and wildlife experience. While animals move freely across the Corbett Tiger Reserve, it is structured into specific zones in order to balance human movement with conservation.
Dhikala is the most iconic safari zone and the heart of Jim Corbett and is renowned for its vast grasslands, the Ramganga Reservoir and exceptional wildlife diversity. It is widely regarded as the best zone for tiger sightings, elephant encounters and immersive wildlife photography, making it the top choice for serious nature enthusiasts. Accessible through the Dhangari gate, this is the only zone that offers canter safari.
Bijrani zone combines dense sal forests with open meadows, creating one of the park's most scenic & peaceful safari experiences, especially during morning game drives. It is easily accessible from Ramnagar through Aamdanda gate and supports a healthy wildlife population. It makes an excellent choice for first-time visitors and photographers alike.
Jhirna is another popular zone that lies along the southern boundary of the park. Unlike Dhikala or Bijrani, this zone is open throughout the year and can be accessed through the Dhela gate. Jhirna offers rewarding safaris across dry forests and grasslands with regular sightings of elephants, deer, sloth bears and predators. Its year-round accessibility makes it one of the most reliable safari zones in the park.
Dhela is one of the most popular buffer safari zones and is known for its diverse landscapes of dense forests of Sal, Rohini, Haldu, Bahera and Kusum, open grasslands and seasonal streams. This zone remains open throughout the year and offers excellent opportunities to spot elephants, deer, leopards and rich birdlife. Accessible through Dhela Gate.
Other Zones
Garjiya, Sonanandi, Durgadevi and Phato are other popular ecotourism zones that offer comparatively quieter safaris through forests, grasslands and riverine landscapes. Although these zones have lesser footfall of travellers, the opportunities for wildlife sightings are excellent.
Every traveller visits Jim Corbett with different goals, interests & expectations. Some are interested in only dedicated tiger safari tours and spotting tigers while others may be more inclined towards photographing wildlife or observing birds. Safari Options Explained
Safaris in Jim Corbett National Park operate twice daily, in the morning and evening, though timings may vary slightly by season and zone. Each safari lasts approximately 3–4 hours and requires a government-issued permit, which is mandatory and strictly limited in number.
Permits are date, zone, and time specific, making advance booking highly recommended. The core zones of the park remain closed from July to mid-November during the monsoon and breeding season, with reopening dates announced annually by forest authorities.
A Jeep Safari is the most popular way to explore the park, operating in all of the zones. Jeep safari offers a personalized wildlife experience. You will be accompanied by an experienced naturalist and driver. It also offers more flexibility to explore different habitats. Safari timings and access vary by season and zone, so planning in advance is recommended.
Canter Safari is a shared safari experience available exclusively in the iconic Dhikala Zone, one of the most sought-after areas of the park. It’s an excellent way to experience Dhikala’s vast grasslands, riverine forests and abundant wildlife. These shared safaris are a great option for larger groups and first-time visitors.
