    About Kanha National Park

Located in the Maikal Hills of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park in India is one of the country’s largest and most celebrated tiger reserves. It is spread across more than 2,000 sq km, with a core area of approximately 940 sq km. The forest of Kanha has a remarkable conservation history. It was first protected as a reserve forest in 1879, then declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1933 and finally becoming a national park in 1955. Later it was also one of the first national parks to be included under Project Tiger in 1973. Today, Kanha is recognised across the world for its thriving wildlife, beautiful landscapes and pioneering conservation efforts.

A Kanha National Park safari offers an experience unlike any other. As the morning mist drifts across endless meadows and towering sal forests, every drive reveals a new side of this extraordinary wilderness. While spotting the majestic Bengal Tiger India is always unforgettable, Kanha is equally celebrated as the only place where the endangered Barasingha (Swamp Deer) was successfully brought back from the brink of extinction. Whether you’re a wildlife photographer, birdwatcher or first-time safari traveller, a Kanha wildlife safari leaves memories that stay with you long after you’ve left the forest.

    What Makes It Special

    Why Visit Kanha National Park

    Home of the Barasingha

The Hard Ground Barasingha (Swamp Deer) is the crown jewel of Kanha and the State Animal of Madhya Pradesh. Found only in Central India, this rare deer was once on the brink of extinction, but decades of dedicated conservation have made Kanha its greatest success story. Today, spotting a Barasingha grazing across Kanha's meadows is one of the park's most special experiences.

    Rich Wildlife & Breathtaking Landscapes

From endless sal forests and bamboo groves to vast open meadows, this park is home to one of India's most spectacular wildlife landscapes. These diverse habitats support an incredible variety of species, including the Bengal Tiger, Barasingha (Swamp Deer), Gaur, Wild Dogs, Leopards and over 300 bird species, making every safari a unique experience.

    A Global Conservation Success

Kanha is internationally recognised as a benchmark for wildlife conservation. Its remarkable recovery of the Hard Ground Barasingha is regarded as one of India's greatest conservation achievements, inspiring wildlife managers and protected areas across the world.

    Inspiration Behind The Jungle Book

The landscapes of this park are widely believed to have inspired Rudyard Kipling's timeless classic, The Jungle Book. Walking through its towering sal forests, open meadows and dense bamboo groves, it's easy to imagine the world of Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera, making every safari feel like a journey through one of literature's most iconic wilderness stories.

    Kanha Zone

The park's namesake zone is known for its vast meadows, excellent wildlife sightings and beautiful landscapes. It is one of the most sought-after zones for both first-time visitors and wildlife photographers.

    Kisli Zone

One of the oldest and most scenic areas of the park, Kisli Zone is famous for its dense sal forests, thriving herbivore populations and regular tiger movement.

    Mukki Zone

Located in the southern part of the reserve, Mukki Zone is highly regarded for tiger sightings, rich biodiversity and excellent wildlife photography opportunities.
