    About Gir National Park

Gir National Park is the only place on Earth where you can witness the Asiatic Lion, only wild population outside Africa roaming freely in its natural habitat. Located in Sasan Gir Junagadh Gujarat, this remarkable landscape is not only India’s pride but also one of the world’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories. Once reduced to just a handful of lions in the early 20th century, the Asiatic Lion has made an extraordinary comeback, thanks to decades of dedicated protection and community-led conservation.
Spread across dry deciduous forests, scrublands, rocky hills and seasonal rivers, Gir National Park offers a landscape unlike any other wildlife reserve in India. The Gir dry deciduous forest supports an impressive diversity of wildlife, including Leopards, Striped Hyenas, Marsh Crocodiles, Nilgai, Sambar, Chital and more than 300 species of birds. Beyond its wildlife, Gir is also home to the indigenous Maldhari community Gir forest, whose traditional coexistence with lions has become an integral part of the region’s conservation story.
A Gir National Park Safari is about far more than spotting a lion. It is an opportunity to witness a landscape where people and wildlife have shared space for generations, explore one of India’s most successful conservation models and experience the thrill of tracking the king of the forest in the only place it truly belongs.

    What Makes It Special

    Why Visit Gir National Park

The Last Kingdom of the Asiatic Lion

There is nowhere else quite like Gir. It is the only place in the world where the Gir National Park Asiatic Lion continues to thrive in its natural habitat. Seeing one of these magnificent cats resting beneath an acacia tree or walking confidently along a forest track is an experience that stays with visitors forever.

    A Landscape Unlike Any Other

Unlike the dense forests of Central India, Gir's open woodlands, rocky hills, riverbeds and Gir dry deciduous forest create excellent visibility for wildlife. This distinctive habitat supports not only lions but an incredible variety of mammals, reptiles and birds.

    More Than Just Lions

While lions are the main attraction, Gir is also one of India's best places to observe leopards, marsh crocodiles and a surprising diversity of wildlife. Every safari offers something different, whether it's a pride of lions, a leopard crossing the track or crocodiles basking beside a reservoir.

    Explore the Best of Gujarat

Many travellers combine Gir National Park with Somnath Temple, Diu Island, Velavadar Blackbuck National Park or the Little Rann of Kutch, creating a journey that blends wildlife, culture and Gujarat's spectacular landscapes.

Safari Zones in Gir National Park

A safari in Gir National Park is more than simply entering the forest. The protected landscape includes the main Gir forest, the interpretation zone at Devalia Safari Park, and several unique routes that each offer a different wildlife experience. Together, they provide visitors with an excellent introduction to the only home of the Asiatic Lion.

    Gir Jungle Trail

The main safari zone offers the classic Gir experience, taking visitors through forests, open scrublands and riverbeds where lions, leopards, deer and numerous bird species roam freely. Every route is allocated by the Forest Department, making each safari a unique adventure.

    Devalia (Gir Interpretation Zone)

Also known as the Gir Interpretation Zone, Devalia Safari Park is ideal for visitors with limited time or families travelling with children. The enclosed safari provides an excellent opportunity to observe lions and other wildlife in a natural habitat, and many visitors choose it alongside the main Gir safari.

    Kankai Temple Route

The Kankai Temple safari Gir forest combines wildlife with one of Gir's most revered spiritual sites. Travelling through the forest towards the historic temple offers scenic landscapes and frequent opportunities to encounter lions, deer and other wildlife along the way.
