Gir National Park is the only place on Earth where you can witness the Asiatic Lion, the only wild population outside Africa roaming freely in its natural habitat. Located in Sasan Gir in Junagadh, Gujarat, this remarkable landscape is not only India’s pride but also one of the world’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories. Once reduced to just a handful of lions in the early 20th century, the Asiatic Lion has made an extraordinary comeback, thanks to decades of dedicated protection and community-led conservation.

Devalia (Gir Interpretation Zone)
Also known as the Gir Interpretation Zone, Devalia Safari Park is ideal for visitors with limited time or families travelling with children. The enclosed safari provides an excellent opportunity to observe lions and other wildlife in a natural habitat, and many visitors choose it alongside the main Gir safari.
Kankai Temple Route

Safari Options Explained
The Evening Jeep Safari starts in the late afternoon and continues for approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, concluding before sunset. As temperatures begin to drop, wildlife becomes more active around water sources and open clearings. The warm golden light creates stunning photography opportunities, while the peaceful atmosphere makes for a memorable end to the day.
Although lions define Gir’s identity, the forest supports an impressive diversity of mammals, reptiles and birds. From elusive leopards hiding among rocky hills to crocodiles basking beside reservoirs, every safari reveals a different side of Gujarat’s only wilderness.

The best time to visit Gir National Park is from December to March, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are excellent. Summer (April to June) is also rewarding for lion sightings around waterholes. The Gir National Park is closed during monsoon from June to October, with the park generally reopening in mid-October.
If you’re wondering how to reach Gir, Rajkot is the nearest major airport, located around 160 km from Sasan Gir. The park is also well connected by road from Rajkot, Junagadh, Somnath and Ahmedabad.
