Northeast India is truly a paradise when it comes to wildlife and nature exploration. And at the heart of this region, sits a beautiful national park that has been famous for decades – Kaziranga. A Kaziranga wildlife safari is not just any jungle excursion, but a real opportunity to explore the hidden natural gems of our northeastern part of the country, which are offbeat and truly mesmerizing. If you are a true nature and wildlife enthusiast, visiting Kaziranga has to be on your bucket list, non-negotiable. It’s one of the biggest wildlife conservation stories of India that you will ever come across.

Kaziranga is the beginning of the incredible web of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and dense forests in Northeast India which harbour a variety of great and exceptional species that aren’t found anywhere else on earth. From the Red panda (Ailurus fulgens) in the highland forests of Arunachal Pradesh to the haunting calls of the Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) echoing through Assam’s rainforests, wildlife safari in Northeast India can easily surpass any other wildlife safari experience in the world.

In this blog, I will walk you through everything you need to know to have a perfect northeast India wildlife safari experience, what animals to look out for, when to go, how to book, and which other parks in the region you can explore as part of your itinerary.

The 7 Sisters are the best wildlife destinations in Northeast India

Northeast India lies at the intersection of two global biodiversity hotspots: the Eastern Himalayas and the Indo-Burma region. This unique geography enables the region to have a very diverse range of flora and fauna. Many of these are not found anywhere in the world. The seven sisters: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, are covered with some of the most amazing and dense forest systems in the world.

This region is home to the Hoolock gibbons, has the world’s biggest population of the one-horned rhinoceros, endangered wild water buffalo or Asiatic wild buffalo, and rare high-altitude Red Panda. Also, this region has a very dense and diverse birdlife, which is a true paradise for birdwatchers from across the world. Thousands of foreign tourists visit here annually, and that makes the northeast India wildlife safari an incredible and ultimate nature exploration experience.

Brief History of Kaziranga National Park: Northeast’s Crown Jewel

Kaziranga in Assam came into existence through an unusual piece of history. In 1905, Lady Curzon (wife of Viceroy Lord Curzon) visited the region and discovered the extraordinary biodiversity in the region. Particularly, the One-horned rhino. This led the colonial administration to take adequate steps to protect the region, and what began as a small wildlife reserve turned into a prominent and most protected area of India. Eventually, Project Tiger came, and that too gave this region multiple benefits from a wildlife conservation perspective.

Kaziranga’s Rhino population has grown significantly from 600 in the 1960s to more than 2,600 by 2024. Although poaching, annual floods, habitat loss, and traffic accidents remain a great threat to their existence, this kind of wildlife conservation achievement easily exceeds any global standards. Today, it’s the only place where you can see the one-horned rhino, and that is a big tourist attraction for visitors from both India and abroad.
