But Agra is not a one-monument heritage destination, limited to just the Taj Mahal. Within a few kilometres sit Agra Fort, one of the finest surviving Mughal citadels in India, and Mehtab Bagh, the garden on the Yamuna’s opposite bank from which the Taj is photographed at its most dramatic.
Agra’s remarkable history is reflected in every fort, garden and monument that stands within the city today. Located in Uttar Pradesh, about 230 km south of Delhi, Agra became the capital of the Delhi Sultanate under Sultan Sikandar Lodi in 1504 and later flourished as the imperial seat of the Mughal Empire. During the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, the city emerged as one of the most important centres of art, architecture and culture in the Indian subcontinent.

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal is the crown jewel of Agra. This masterpiece was built between 1632 and 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. Twenty thousand craftsmen and labourers from across the Mughal empire worked for 21 years to complete it. The white Makrana marble was brought from Rajasthan; semi-precious inlay stones from Persia, China, Tibet and Arabia. The four minarets are built slightly outward so that in the event of an earthquake they would fall away from the tomb rather than onto it. The garden, divided into four quadrants by water channels, is a representation of the Islamic paradise described in the Quran.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Agra Fort served as the principal residence of the Mughal emperors before the capital shifted to Delhi. This sweeping red sandstone Mughal citadel on the Yamuna riverbank is enclosed by 20-metre-high walls with a 12-metre moat. It was built, modified and expanded over more than a century by 3 successive emperors namely Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The Khas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas and Musamman Burj (the octagonal tower from which, according to legend, the imprisoned Shah Jahan spent his final years gazing at the Taj Mahal across the river) are the most memorable spaces. The view of the Taj from the fort is the finest distant view available from anywhere in the city.

Mehtab Bagh is a Mughal garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal and provides one of the finest panoramic views of the Taj. Emperor Akbar had it built as the northern terminus of the char-bagh garden sequence that culminates in the Taj. At sunset, the Taj’s rear facade is directly visible across the river as the sky changes behind it. The reflection in the river when the water level is right turns the dome upside-down in golden light, creating a captivating sight of the monument. It is significantly less crowded than the main complex and is one of the finest locations for Taj photography in Agra.

Located about 40 km from Agra, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was Emperor Akbar’s magnificent red sandstone capital for a brief period in the 16th century. The monument was built in 1571 and abandoned after just 14 years, possibly due to water shortage. The result is an entire Mughal city frozen in the moment of its abandonment, with no later additions or modifications in the original vision. The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Victory) which is 54 metres high is one of the largest gateways in the world. The Diwan-i-Khas, Panch Mahal and the Jodhabai Palace are extraordinary and mention-worthy.
