Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary offers a birding experience quite unlike India’s forests and wetlands. Once used as a hunting reserve by the Maharaja of Bikaner, this protected landscape is now recognised as one of India’s most rewarding places for observing raptors. Its open, semi-arid grasslands, scattered acacia and khejri trees, and thorny desert scrub provide excellent visibility across the sanctuary.
Part of the wider Thar Desert landscape, Tal Chhapar is a flat saline depression, locally known as a “tal.” Seasonal pools attract resident and migratory birds, while the khejri trees provide habitat for species such as the Indian spotted creeper. Indian spiny-tailed lizards are also found here in large numbers, often emerging to feed and bask in the winter sun and, in turn, attracting several birds of prey.
The sanctuary is equally famous for its blackbucks, which can often be seen moving gracefully across the open plains. Winter brings migratory harriers, eagles and other raptors, making it an especially rewarding season for birders. With nearly 300 bird species reported from the region, along with its striking grasslands and dramatic skies, Tal Chhapar also offers wonderful opportunities for wildlife photography.
