Khichan Bird Sanctuary is unlike most birding destinations in India. Set amid the arid landscape of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert, this small village has become internationally known for the thousands of Demoiselle Cranes that arrive every winter. The surrounding wetlands, scrub and desert landscape also support a wider range of resident and migratory birds.
The story of Khichan is as remarkable as its birdlife. Khichan’s conservation story is closely linked to Ratan Lal Maloo, fondly remembered as the Bird Man of Khichan. What began with him feeding a small group of migratory Demoiselle Cranes in the 1970s gradually grew into a remarkable community-led tradition that continues to protect and welcome thousands of cranes each winter. Today, the cranes gather around designated feeding areas, nearby water bodies and surrounding open landscapes during their winter stay.
For birders and photographers, the spectacle is particularly striking during the morning and afternoon, when large groups of cranes move between feeding, resting and watering areas.
