Tiger Attack Killed Dhela Woman While Collecting Fodder | Jim Corbett

The woman’s name was Kala Devi who went to the forests of the Dhela Zone of the Jim Corbett National Park to collect fodder in the sunny afternoon. She was accompanied by other women who fled the scene after encountering the tiger. Luckily they got away unhurt and informed the locals to search for Kala’s body.

After the body was found, it was sent for autopsy. Moreover, the father of Kala Devi has refused to take the body of their daughter and urged the local officials to keep her in a cage and lure the tiger to catch it. Moreover, the convener of the Sanyukta Sangharsh Committee made the Corbett Administration and Uttarakhand Government responsible for the death of Kala Devi. He held the administration responsible for not taking adequate measures to prevent people from wild animal attacks even after a previous man-eater tiger killed multiple people in the regions surrounding Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Moreover, local residents also expressed frustration with the authorities for not taking adequate steps to prevent such incidents. They expressed concerns that either these dangerous animals must be shifted to other national parks away from the human population, or must be kept away with relevant boundaries and protection mechanisms so that they don’t come in direct contact with humans. People started the demand to collect the tiger and relocate it as soon as possible.

Tiger Attack Killed Dhela Woman: What can Authorities do in this case?

Local people held the authorities responsible for not taking adequate measures to prevent such incidents. Here are a couple of measures that multiple local authorities can implement –

  • Setting up of electric fencing systems and multiple technology-enabled warning systems. These will play a key role in ensuring that no tiger can cross the designated boundary. Also, it cannot cause any harm to the local residents.
  • Set up multiple camera systems in place to monitor the movement of tigers. These include areas of dense human population to prevent the entry of wild animals into the human settlement regions.
  • Forest department and government officials must enforce stricter rules for accessing the Jim Corbett forests. Allot fixed time windows for locals to collect fodder and forest resources. Moreover, make it mandatory for people to enter in groups. In case of high-risk zones, they must be accompanied by a forest official for the entire journey.
  • Launch Community awareness and preparedness programs to better tackle wildlife instances in real life. Train locals for all types of emergency responses. Also, distribute safety equipment amongst the public. They can use it to handle any type of unwanted wild animal attack.
  • Last but not least, the government must provide alternate sources of resource dependency for the local public so that they reduce the usage of forest resources. They should set up alternate supply chains and locations to source fodder for the use of public living in the villages surrounding the forest regions.
